UFC 167 features a great welterweight bout between Josh Koscheck and Tyron Woodley. Not only are both of these fighters elite wrestlers, but they have the power in their hands to knock out any opponent if they land flush. Both are coming off losses, so their will to win will be at an all-time high.
Koscheck has been a perennial welterweight contender for some time now, but he hasn’t looked impressive as of late. He is on a two-fight losing streak, and his most recent loss was a brutal one where Robbie Lawler was able to get the TKO. He will need to rebound from this loss, especially if he ever thinks about contending for a title again before he hangs up the gloves. Koscheck has all of the athletic talent needed to be a champion, but he just hasn’t been able to put things together.
Like Koscheck, Woodley is also in need of a win. In his latest outing against Jake Shields, he was pressed up against the cage for much of the fight, and he wasn’t able to land his explosive punches. Woodley has a lot of power, which was clear in his bout with Jay Hieron, but he doesn’t fight with a sense of urgency sometimes. He will need to do this against Koscheck, as another loss would be a huge setback for his career.
It’s going to be interesting to see where this fight plays out. Both are excellent wrestlers, and it’s a toss-up in the power department. The fight may come down to strategy and cardio.
