Chael Sonnen and Rashad Evans went to war tonight for UFC 167, which marked the UFC’s 20th year anniversary. Both fighters put on a great show for the fans, but it was Evans who ultimately came out the victor. Sonnen came into the fight looking to press his will early, but Evans proved to be the better wrestler.

Evans got Sonnen to the ground, and it was pretty much over from there. Evans landed some relentless ground and pound, getting the stoppage early in the first. This is an important win for Evans and a hard one too, considering that these two work together on a daily basis. This was a beatdown for Evans, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

He now reasserts himself in the light heavyweight division, where big fights are looming for him in the future. For Sonnen, this is a devastating loss, because it’s yet another instance where he was dominated early in a fight. He has other things to look forward to in the future, namely his fight with Wanderlei Silva and his coaching gig for TUF Brazil edition.

For Evans, he takes a step forward in his career, and it’s going to be interesting to see who the UFC matches him up with next. Maybe a bout with Daniel Cormier seems like the most appropriate fight right now. Both are elite wrestlers, and they would surely put on a show for the fans.  The winner would take one step closer to a title shot.
