There are very few times in a fighter’s career where their next win is a must-win situation. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has found himself in that situation.

It seems really weird to me, and maybe it is because at one time, Shogun was one of the most feared fighters in the UFC. He knocked out Lyoto Machida, Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell. Shogun was the champion at one point but was run over by Jon Jones, and he has never been the same since.

Shogun may have made a serious mistake by taking a fight against Chael Sonnen. In one of the most surprising finishes I have ever seen, Sonnen choked out Shogun early in the first round. Shogun was seen crying after the fight. If he has any hope of getting back into title contention, he needs to realize that the past is the past.

Since that Sonnen fight, there were rumblings that Shogun did not have the same fire that he used to and he was training with the wrong people, and it showed.

Shogun’s next opponent James Te Huna has some serious power, but is coming off a loss to Glover Teixeira. Shogun should be focused on only winning this fight. I know some of you might not like this, but Shogun needs to fight smart and makes sure he gets this win. The time for aggressive, wild punches and kicks are over for now. He needs to go for a decision here; maybe use his wrestling to make sure that Te Huna’s power can be neutralized.

Shogun was one of the pound-for-pound greats at one time, but now all he needs to do is make sure that he beats Te Huna.
