One of the most exciting lightweight fighters in the UFC right now is Khabib Nurmagomedov. He’s currently on a 21-fight winning streak, having zero losses on his record. He’s one of the best wrestlers in the division, and his hands have made marked improvements since joining the UFC.

He’s one the verge of a title shot, and just needs one more signature win to really claim his right to fight for the belt, which is being held by Anthony Pettis. It looks like Khabib has his sights set on Gilbert Melendez. Nurmagomedov challenged Melendez via Instagram earlier this week, saying he liked the fight and asked Gilbert to oblige him. This bout has yet to be booked, but it really makes the most sense for both.

Melendez is coming off an impressive win over Diego Sanchez, and he’s considered to be one of the best lightweights in the division. In fact, some people felt he did enough to beat Ben Henderson when he challenged him for the belt. One more win for Gilbert, and he’s on the verge of another title shot. He certainly would be deserving if he could get past Nurmagomedov. He has been waiting for an elite fighter to face, and he would certainly get this going up against Melendez.

The UFC could say it’s a no. 1 contender bout where the winner would fight for the title. Not only does this fight make sense on paper, but it makes a lot of sense for the fans.  Both opponents love to push the pace on their opponents, so fans would be in for a real war.
