Another excellent bout has been added to UFC 170, as Demian Maia and Rory MacDonald will battle it out in the welterweight division. This news comes from the UFC Tonight show on the Fox Sports 1 show. This is a huge bout for both fighters, as they are coming off losses that prevented them from getting a title shot.
A win gets them right back in the hunt for a title, so their will to win will be at an all time high. Maia comes into this bout off a loss to Jake Shields. It was a closely contested fight, but at the end of the day, the judges awarded Shields with the split decision. Before this loss, Maia was making waves in the division, and he’s going to be looking to prove he’s the superior grappler when he faces MacDonald.
Just like Maia, McDonald is also coming off a split-decision loss. It was to Robbie Lawler, and he didn’t really fight with a sense of desperation. However, after the loss, McDonald told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he has his fire back, and that he’s going to hurt the next opponent that he’s matched up against. It should be an excellent welterweight bout on paper, and the winner puts their name back in title contention again, where Georges St. Pierre is still the champion.
The stakes couldn’t be higher for either fighters, as a two-fight losing streak would surely put an end to their title dreams. So, who will come out the victor, Maia or MacDonald?
