An amazing welterweight bout has been booked between Hector Lombard and Jake Shields. This is huge news for both, as a win would certainly give them the chance to move up the rankings in hopes of fighting for a title. This bout is expected to take place at UFC 171, which will be in Dallas, TX.

Coming into this pivotal welterweight bout, Shields is looking to make a statement. He had a great showing against Demian Maia, where he ended up picking up a split decision; it was one of Shield’s biggest wins to date. In the bout, he showed some great control on the ground and it was amazing to see him hold his own, in terms of grappling, with Maia, who is considered to be one of the best jiu jitsu fighters in the UFC.

Lombard will be coming into this fight off a spectacular win over Nate Marquardt, where he ended up finishing him in the very first round. It was Lombard’s first trip down to welterweight, and he couldn’t have done any better. He’s going to be a force at welterweight, because he was already considered one of the most feared strikers at middleweight. He will surely have a size and strength advantage over many opponents he faces, and he hopes this will be true going up against Shields.

This is a very interesting, stylistic matchup. Shields is one of the better wrestlers/jiu jitsu practitioners at welterweight, where Lombard is a devastating striker who has exceptional judo skills. The winner puts their name to challenge for the title, where Georges St. Pierre is the current champion.
