One of the biggest fights in the UFC’s featherweight division takes place this weekend between Chad Mendes and Nik Lentz. A win for either of these fighters would surely mean a title shot, whether it’s against Jose Aldo or Ricardo Lamas. Also, both Mendes and Lentz have been tearing through the featherweight division.
Mendes comes into this fight on a hot streak, having finished four straight opponents in the first round by way of TKO/KO. In his latest UFC outing, which was probably his most impressive, Mendes ended up stopping Clay Guida, who is known for his toughness and durability to take punishment. Guida wasn’t able to handle the storm of Mendes’ stand-up, and it was a great signature win for him.
Ever since getting lined up with Duane Ludwig, Mendes’ striking has been crisp and accurate, and he’s one fight away from fighting for the belt.
Lentz comes into this fight looking to play spoiler. He’s currently the eighth-ranked featherweight in the world, and if he can beat the no. 1-ranked Mendes, he’ll right up there with the best of them. Ever since going down to the featherweight division, Lentz has put together three straight wins. He’s an exceptional wrestler who likes to grind his opponents out. It’s going to be interesting to see how he fares when taking on one of the best in the division.
Up for grabs is a potential title shot, so both fighters will be fighting like their job is on the line in this one.
