The flyweight belt is up for grabs this Saturday night for UFC on Fox 9. Demetrious Johnson will be looking to defend it, and Joseph Benavidez will be looking to capture it for the first time in his career. Both of these fighters have fought in the past and Johnson was able to get the win. Since then, both have improved tremendously, so this should be an amazing title fight where the winner proves they are the best flyweight in the world.
Benavidez has been on a mission as of late, defeating three straight opponents. His latest two victories were impressive TKOs, which is a credit to the type of power and improved striking Benavidez has shown. He seems to be more polished, and he’s still just as dangerous on the ground, often scrambling to get submissions. Benavidez has only lost once in his UFC tenure, which was to DJ, and he will look to prove he’s the better man when they square off in the rematch.
Johnson comes into this fight with much momentum. He’s currently riding a four-fight winning streak. He’s gotten a lot of flack for not finishing his fights, but he put the critics on blast by getting the submission over one of his toughest opponents to date, John Moraga. Johnson is one of the most athletic, explosive guys at flyweight, and his wrestling is on another level.
The way he transitions from striking to grappling is seamless, and he’ll look to prove he’s still the better man when he squares off with Benavidez.
