A huge deal broke today, dealing with the UFC‘s women divisions. Apparently, the UFC is adding a strawweight division to their roster, 115lbs, which is huge news for women fighters all around the world. Now, fighters, such as Tecia Torres, Felice Herrig, and Carla Esparza, will get the chance to fight in the UFC.

First, however, they will have to compete on The Ultimate Fighter, where the winner of the show will be the first ever TUF strawweight champion. This news was confirmed by the UFC’s Twitter page:

In May, those 11 strawweights will compete on season 20 of TUF; the winner of the season will become the UFC strawweight champion

Among those fighters competing on the show, some of the most popular include the aforementioned Torres, Herrig, Esparza, which also includes Bec Hyatt, Julianna Lima and Rose Namajunas. Some of these fighters are some of the most popular in women’s MMA, so it’s looking like TUF is getting revitalized, after having season after season of the same, played out, format.

It’s going to be an interesting season of TUF. Currently, Esparza is the current strawweight champion under the Invicta banner, but now she, and others, will get the chance to compete for a championship belt in the UFC. The stakes have never been higher for these fighters, and it’s going to be interesting to see who has what it takes to be a champion. The women’s strawweight division has been one of the most exciting divisions in MMA, and it’s great to see the UFC take an interest in it.
