An exciting featherweight bout took place tonight for UFC on Fox 9 between Nik Lentz and Chad Mendes. Up for grabs: a featherweight title shot against either Ricardo Lamas or Jose Aldo. So, much was on the line in this fight. The fight started off with Mendes throwing heavy leather. He hurt Lentz early and then took him down.

Mendes seemed to be the faster fighter in this bout, and he used this to keep Lentz questioning Mendes’ every move. Mendes would take Lentz down a lot in the second, controlling the fight on the ground. Mendes ended up getting the decision, proving to be the better wrestler in the bout.

Lentz had his moments, especially when Mendes seemed to slow down in the last two rounds. But, Lentz wasn’t able to really put significant combinations together to really hurt Mendez. Now, Mendes has won five straight, and he is still the No. 1 contender in the featherweight division.

Mendes wasn’t able to get the finish in the first, which is something he’s not accustomed to in his UFC tenure. Credit this to the toughness of Lentz, who proved he can hang with some of the best in the UFC. Now, Mendes will be next up to challenge the winner of Jose Aldo vs. Ricardo Lamas for the featherweight belt. Mendes didn’t have his best outing, which may have been due to fighting in his home crowd and having a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Congrats to Mendes on the much-needed win.
