UFC on Fox 9 kicked off today, which featured an exciting flyweight bout between Scott Jorgensen and Zach Makovsky. Both of these fighters were looking to make a statement, as the winner would take a huge step up in the rankings in hopes of a title shot. Both fighters battled it out for three straight rounds, but it was Makovsky who was ultimately awarded the decision.
Makovsky showed much improved stand up in this bout, peppering Jorgensen with some straight rights. He also got the better of the ground game, proving he’s still improving as a fighter. Even more impressive was the fact that it was his UFC debut. Zach fought under the Bellator banner for many years, and he was even the bantamweight champ of their division, before getting defeated by Eduardo Dantas.
Since this loss and since moving to flyweight, he has never looked better. Tonight, Makovsky proved he is a UFC-caliber fighter, and this is arguably his biggest win to date, especially considering he took this fight on short notice. Now, Zach makes for a great addition to the UFC’s flyweight division, which is currently being ruled by Demetrious Johnson. Makovsky is a very competent wrestler, and if he can keep improving his stand up game, he’s got a great shot at getting a UFC title.
For Jorgensen, this is a disappointing victory, as he was looking to resurrect his career in the flyweight division. He will need to adjust some things if he ever wants to compete for a belt. Congrats to Zach on the impressive UFC debut.
