Dustin Poirier was a man on a mission against Diego Brandao, which took place at UFC 168. Both fighters exchanged barbs at the weigh-ins, where Brandao showed up eight pounds heavier than his target weight of 145 pounds. It wasn’t the missing weight part that fired Poirier at the weigh-ins; it was the fact that Brando threatened to stab Poirier’s neck with a knife.

Obviously Poirier didn’t take this too lightly, which was clear in his bout with Brandao. Poirier pressured Brandao from the very beginning, and Brandao was not able to take the punishment. He got the stoppage in the first round, and it was a huge feather in Poirier’s cap. Now, he takes a step up the rankings at featherweight, which is currently being reigned by Jose Aldo. So, what’s next for Poirier at this point in his career?

Apparently he wants a rematch with Cub Swanson, which was revealed at the UFC 168 post-fight press conference. He feels he has all the skills in the world to beat Swanson. When he first fought Swanson, Poirier was coming into the fight on short notice, and he had to travel a great deal to get to the fight. Maybe if Poirier had more time to prepare for the bout, he would have done better. This fight would be great for Poirier, as a win would give him the chance to climb back up the rankings in hopes of getting a title shot.

Who do you feel is appropriate for Poirier’s next opponent, and do you see him challenging for the title in 2014? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
