The middleweight division has never been more stacked. There are so many good fighters in it and it’s going to be an interesting year for the division in 2014. Currently, Chris Weidman is the middleweight champ. He was able to defeat Anderson Silva for the second straight time.
His two performances over Silva were dominant, and Weidman seems like he has the tools to rule the division for a long time. But with every division, there are always new contenders emerging. In the middleweight division, guys like Lyoto Machida, Gegard Mousasi and Michael Bisping are all looking to earn a title shot. Maybe the most interesting prospect in the division is Ronaldo Souza, who is one of the most dangerous grapplers in MMA.
Souza is 2-0 in the UFC. He’s coming off one of his best performances, a TKO stoppage in the first round against Yushin Okami. Okami has been one of the best middleweights over the recent years, so it was quite impressive to see Souza dominate him in the fashion that he did. Not only that, but Souza did it with his hands, so it’s clear he’s improving by leaps and bounds in the standup department.
Souza is set to face Francis Carmont, which will be a huge fight for the division. If Souza can defeat Carmont, he’s more than likely next in line for a title shot and he could pose some serious stylistic problems for Weidman if he’s still the champ. 2014 is shaping up to be a great year for the middleweight division in the UFC, and Souza is certainly a fighter to look out for.
