The UFC featured an important featherweight bout tonight in Chicago between Jeremy Stephens and Darren Elkins. The first round was razor close, and the judges could have given it to either fighter. The second and third rounds were just as close, but at the end of the day, the judges awarded the decision to Jeremy Stephens.
Stephens is now 3-0 in the featherweight division, and he’s proving to be an elite fighter at this weight class. Stephens always was an exciting, explosive striker in the lightweight division, but he always came up short going up against the best of them, especially if it was against elite wrestlers.
However, at featherweight, Stephens can thwart off takedowns better, which was the case tonight against Elkins. Elkins is considered one of the better wrestlers in this division, and he is usually able to dictate where the fight unfolds in the octagon. This wasn’t the case tonight, as Stephens stuffed Elkins’ takedowns time and time again.
Now, Stephens is on a three-fight winning streak, and it seems like he is finally putting everything together. If he can keep his winning ways going, he will be fighting for a title within a year or less. Stephens showcased some powerful punches tonight, and he landed some solid kicks on Elkins, who was never really able to force the fight on Stephens until the third round. By that time, it was all too late, and Stephens walked away with the win. It’s one of his most important wins to date, and Stephens is going to be a force in this division going forward.
