Alistair Overeem needed to make a statement tonight against Frank Mir, otherwise his job with the UFC may have been in jeopardy. When the cards were stacked against him, Overeem delivered an impressive performance. He dominated Mir tonight at UFC 169. In the first, he landed a beautiful knee, which had Mir hurt. He would land some good shots on the ground, while Mir was trying to recover.

In the second, Overeem paced himself, landing some hard shots on the ground. He did the same in the third, and it was clear Overeem was the superior fighter when it was over. He landed a ton of shots on top of Mir, who was never really able to lock up a submission. Overeem went on to win a unanimous decision. It was a dominant win for him, and it was much needed, as he was on a two-fight losing streak. Overeem was never really in trouble once in this fight.

An impressive thing about Overeem’s performance tonight was the fact that he showed an improved gas tank. This has always been one of his weakest attributes, and it cost him too many times in his career. This doesn’t seem to be a problem anymore, and if he can continue his training and improve his techniques, he’s still going to be an elite heavyweight. Tonight Overeem took a great step toward moving up the heavyweight rankings, and it’s going to be interesting to see where he goes from this win.
