Powerful middleweight Yoel Romero will get a strong test at UFC on FOX 11 as he will square off against Brad Tavares. The April 19 matchup in Orlando features two fighters who are on significant winning streaks. Romero brutally stopped Derek Brunson in the third round of his last bout at Fight Night 35, while Tavares picked up his fifth straight win on that same card when he registered a unanimous decision victory over Lorenz Larkin.
Romero has proven to be an extremely dangerous competitor inside the Octagon as he has produced three violent stoppages in his three appearances. It’s already netted him a Fight of the Night and a Knockout of the Night bonus.
It’s been interesting to see the standout former Olympic silver-medal winning wrestler showcase a devastating striking game. “Soldier of God” broke Brunson’s jaw with a ferocious flurry of punches in the third round of a fight that he had been losing. Romero is 7-1 in his career, and all of those wins have been produced by knockout. His lone defeat came at the hands of the dangerous Rafael Cavalcante back in Strikeforce.
As for Tavares, he’s been rolling along but hasn’t produced the path of destruction that his opponent has. Tavares showcases a solid work rate and used that effectively in his latest win against Larkin. Tavares is an impressive 7-1 during his UFC career, with his lone defeat coming at the hands of Aaron Simpson. He’s bounced back from that loss to produce five consecutive decision victories to raise his career record to a solid 12-1.
This is an outstanding addition to what is shaping up as a great night of fights in Orlando. Romero will be looking to continue to show he’s a force to be reckoned with in the 185-pound division, while Tavares will definitely get that bump to a top-10 ranking if he can continue his winning ways against a very formidable opponent.
