Daniel Cormier was all geared up to face Rashad Evans, a light heavyweight bout that had title implications for the winner. The bout was scheduled to co-headline the UFC 170 card, which was shaping up to be one of the better cards this year. Sadly, Evans has been forced out of the fight due to an injury, specifically a leg injury he suffered during his training. UFC.com broke the devastating news.
Now that Evans is off the card and Cormier is without an opponent for his light heavyweight debut fight, where does the UFC go from here? This bout was going to be an entertaining fight for sure, as the two combatants are arguably the best wrestlers in MMA. Their standup skills are great, and either fighter can end the fight with one punch.
The UFC has several options for a replacement, but it appears that Chael Sonnen, one of the most entertaining and controversial fighters in the sport right now, has pleaded his case to fight Cormier. Sonnen called out Cormier via Twitter, claiming all Cormier has to do is say his name and he’ll be ready for the February 22 card.
This is not the fight fans wanted, but for Cormier, it’s better than nothing, and it doesn’t do him any harm testing the waters at light heavyweight by facing a very tough, durable Sonnen.
