15 Celebrities Who Could Succeed In MMA
Celebrities Who Would Be Tough Enough to Fight in MMA
Over the last 10 years, the sport of MMA has taken over the world of professional fighting as entities such as UFC have brought the sport to the mainstream. Star fighters such as Anderson Silva, Chuck Liddell and Quinton Jackson have become household names for sports fans, and MMA has taken over boxing as the premier combat sport.
The reasons for this are complex, but it's obvious that sports fans are intrigued by the fact that you see a mix of different martial arts in MMA. And just like any rapidly-growing "new" sport, people of all walks of life have attempted to become MMA fighters. Celebrities are no different in taking up the newest fad, and many are trying their hands at MMA in an effort to build their physique and to prepare for various roles.
Keeping this in mind, I have formed a list of the 15 celebrities who could succeed in MMA. Each person on this list has either participated in one of the many fighting disciplines that is used in MMA, been involved in fighting in real life or in cinema, or has the strength and toughness to actually last in a professional MMA fight.
Enjoy, and please feel free to give feedback as to who you feel should or shouldn't be on the list.
15. Jason Statham
Jason Statham makes a living out of being a tough guy in movies, and he prepares for these roles by training in karate, jiu-jitsu and Wing Chun. While fighting in a movie is different than in MMA, I would not bet against Statham.
14. Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel L. Jackson has been in too many movies to count, and he has received training for many of the fighting scenes he has been in. Jackson is one of the more intimidating actors out there today, and at 6-foot-2, there is little doubt that he also packs a punch.
13. A$AP Rocky
Rapper A$AP Rocky may have a deep love for fashion and music, but he has also been involved in numerous altercations that have gone public. With a little training, he could be successful as a MMA fighter.
12. Ryan Phillippe
Ryan Phillippe keeps a low profile when he is not busy acting in films, and he spends much of this time training in Tae Kwon Do, having earned a black belt. He previously used this training to fight off bullies in the school yard. Going into the sport of MMA would be a little different, but I believe that Phillippe could do it.
11. Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan received training from master Yu Jim Yuen in the disciplines of Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido and Shaolin Kung-Fu. Chan earned a black belt during his training, and after watching him in movies throughout the years, it is clear that the man knows how to fight.
10. Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel has had extensive training in combat training and MMA for many of his action films, and he is amongst the strongest actors in Hollywood today. It would be hard to bet against him in MMA.
Rapper DMX recently had a fight with George Zimmerman called off, and this is a good thing for the latter. DMX has previously trained in MMA and reportedly has training in boxing, not to mention the many incidents he has been involved in outside of regulated rings. There is no doubting that the rapper would be tough and ruthless enough to fight in MMA.
8. Taylor Lautner
Taylor Lautner may be in movies such as Twilight that don't exactly scream toughness, but he has been training in martial arts since the age of six. At the age of 22, he is one of the youngest celebrities who would have a chance in MMA.
7. Christian Bale
Christian Bale's credentials as a fighter are well documented from his time as Batman, and he studied Wing Chun in preparation for this role. If the man can take down the Joker, I will pick him to succeed in MMA.
6. Matt Damon
Matt Damon is best known as an action star from his days as Jason Bourne in the Bourne film series. In preparation for the film Green Zone, the actor also received combat training from an actual soldier. That makes him a viable candidate to compete in MMA.
5. Brad Pitt
The movie Fight Club immortalized Brad Pitt in the world of physical combat. He trained in hand-to-hand combat in preparation for this role, and also trained with active-duty soldiers before filming Fury. While training and actually fighting are two separate things, I would put money on Pitt to be a success in MMA.
4. Bruce Willis
Bruce Willis has been in a number of different action movies, and there is no doubting the man has some genuine fighting ability. Along the way to becoming a perennial award-winning actor, Willis has received training in numerous forms of combat, and would be prepared to fight in MMA.
3. Tony Jaa
Prior to appearing in films, Tony Jaa trained in Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai, Aikido and Krabi Krabong. While some now look at Jaa as simply an actor in the Fast and Furious series, there is no doubting that he could succeed in MMA.
2. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
Dwayne Johnson has had a ton of sports training during his lifetime. He played college football at Miami, was a full-time professional wrestler in WWE, and has been one of the most in-shape actors in Hollywood. There may not be a more physically imposing actor alive than Johnson today.
1. Mark Wahlberg
Mark Wahlberg is the ultimate action movie star who has received training from Navy SEALs, has years of training the boxing ring, and has generally stayed in shape along the way to prepare for his roles. When you combine this with the fighting that Wahlberg admittedly did during his youth, there is no doubt that he could be a huge success in MMA.
