Tonight fans saw an incredible light heavyweight bout, which was the co-main event, between heavy-handed Daniel Cormier and the newcomer Pat Cummins. On paper, this was going to be a route for Cormier, as he’s the much more experienced, well-versed fighter. This proved to be the case, as Cormier was able to destroy Cummins in the first round.

He clipped Cummins early, and he put him away. Most fans and media felt this was a squash match for Cormier, which proved to be the case. But Cormier needed an opponent, and he got one with Cummins, who was trash-talking his way all the way up to the fight. This was not wise, however, as Cormier made him pay for his words. Trash-talking is a very entertaining way to hype up a fight, but with every reaction, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Cummins, having only four professional fights, was not able to handle Cormier’s power, and Cormier made him look like an amateur inside the cage tonight.

So what’s next for Cormier? He dominated in his first fight down to the light heavyweight division, and there are a lot of options for him in terms of an opponent. The UFC may want to go ahead and book the originally fight with Rashad Evans, because that was going to be one heck of a fight for both. The winner of this fight could take on the winner of the Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira bout.
