Many thought Gilbert Melendez, one of the best lightweight fighters on the planet, was heading to Bellator. It seemed like negotiations with the UFC were not going according to plans, and surprisingly, Gilbert and his management were thought to be taking their talents elsewhere. However, it was announced last night that Melendez will be staying with the UFC as the promotion has decided to match Bellator’s offer.
Even more, Melendez will get an opportunity of a lifetime as he will be coaching against Anthony Pettis, the current UFC lightweight champ, on TUF season 20 show. This season, which features the debut of the women’s strawweight division in the UFC, will be as interesting as ever because Melendez will get the chance to out-coach Pettis. The season will feature fighters like Felice Herrig, Tecia Torres, and Invicta‘s 115-pound champ Carla Esparza.
Now that Melendez is still with the UFC and will be coaching against Pettis, the sky’s the limit for him. Melendez has the chance to reach his dreams of becoming a champ, and being on the show gives him the chance to build his brand even more before the title fight with Pettis. Melendez, one of the best wrestler/boxers in the game right now, is getting a second chance to become a champ.
He came up short the first time against Ben Henderson, which he lost by way of controversial split decision. After the loss, he rebounded with a Fight Of The Year performance against Diego Sanchez, and he’s hoping to build off this win when he takes on Pettis. One thing is for sure: the next season of TUF is going to be interesting.
