The heavyweight division is full of knockout artists, and two of the most prominent squared off today for the UFC‘s TUF China Finale. Going up against Shawn Jordan, Matt Mitrione was in desperate need of a win. His last loss to Brendan Schaub by way of submission was an embarrassing defeat for him, but going up against Jordan, he redeemed himself with a beautiful, devastating KO at the end of the first round.

The performance, his sixth finish of his career, won a Performance Of The Night award, and it’s one of his biggest wins to date. Even though Mitrione will never challenge for the title, which is currently being held by Cain Velasquez, he’s still an exciting fighter. This is a huge commodity for the UFC because they take pride in their fighters being able to finish.

Mitrione may be a gatekeeper at heavyweight, but there’s no shame in that. As long as he can keep getting big finishes in between losses, he shouldn’t have to worry about job security for a long time.

In terms of the next opponent for Mitrione, a bout with Todd Duffee would be a whole lot of fun. Duffee is one of the biggest, powerful fighters in the division, so a bout with Mitrione would be instant fireworks. The bout would surely not go the distance, and if Mitrione can get a win, he will get high-profile fights in the future.

Mitrione is a fun, scrappy fighter who is always looking for the finish. It’s a shame more fighters don’t employ the same type of strategy into their fighting style, because this would produce more exciting fights for the UFC.
