Dana White recently released a statement saying that if Carlos Condit is able to pull out a win over Tyron Woodley, then Condit would get the next title shot. I thought that I was agreeing with the masses that this is fair, and quite frankly, well deserved.
Thanks to the power of social media, and the fact that every moron on Earth has a platform to voice their idiotic opinions, it is not a popular decision. At first, I thought that it was just some cheap trick; how could he not get the next title shot? He was the interim-champion and defeated almost everyone but Johny Hendricks. He also gave Hendricks the fight of his life and I think if it was a five-round fight, things could have went differently; but I digress. Condit deserves the title shot with a win, not because of what he accomplished, but what he is going to accomplish.
Woodley is coming off the biggest win in his career, and a highly publicized one at that. He absolutely starched Josh Koscheck — knocked him out cold in absolutely brutal fashion, no if, ands or buts about it. With that win, Woodley immediately turned himself into a contender; no one has ever done that to Koscheck. The only other contender that would have had an argument at getting the next title shot would have been Jake Shields. Although Shields is on a three fight win streak, two of them have come by split-decision and none of them have really showed dominance. Condit, on the other hand, has faced the toughest in the division, and even in his losses, has turned in amazing performances.
It is clear that with a win over Woodley, Condit deserves the next title shot.
