Hector Lombard is one of the most physically imposing specimens in MMA. His muscle mass alone strikes fear into the hearts of his opponents, and he has the judo and striking skills to back up everything he says inside the cage. Going up against Jake Shields, Lombard knew he had to be careful.
One mistake with Shields on the ground could cost him, so he had to be mindful at every turn on the ground. Lombard battered Shields for three straight rounds, taking him down at will. It was a dominant win for him, and it certainly was an important win that puts him in the right place in terms of breaking into the top 10 of the division.
Lombard is one of the best strikers, and his judo skills have come through time and time again. It appears that welterweight is the best weight class for him, and he’s looking like a championship-level fighter. So who should Lombard fight next? A fight that makes the most sense is against Rory MacDonald. MacDonald is currently ranked second in the division, so this would be a high-profile fight for Lombard.
Stylistically, Lombard matches up very well with MacDonald. He has the power to knock him out, and he certainly could impose his will on the ground. One more win for Lombard and he will be fighting for a title, probably in 2014.
