Former world title holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KO) and current 160-pound title holder Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26KO) appear to be headed to a summer matchup in Los Angeles. Chavez Jr. is coming off a convincing 12-round decision over Brian Vera, and Golovkin another devastating knockout victory.

This will be a pivotal fight in both men’s careers, a matchup that will serve as a measuring stick and show us what they are capable of against the best in the division.

For Golovkin, it will be his biggest fight to date, and his first against a big-name opponent. Golovkin touts an incredible amateur career record of 345-5, and is currently on a 15-fight knockout streak. Now 29 fights into his professional career, he has yet to be tested, and in some bouts untouched. One thing we can almost guarantee is he will be hit by Chavez Jr., and his chin will tested.

Chavez Jr. is coming off a big win over Vera, a moment in his career where we all saw how good he can be when he is 100 percent dedicated to his craft. The stage of the July bout against Golovkin will not overwhelm him; he has been on PPV before in a massive fight against middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez. We saw him get beat up for 11 full rounds by Martinez before coming back and being seconds away from knocking out the champ. Chavez showed in that fight you can never count him out, as he has the ability to change the bout with one punch.

It will not only be a great bout on paper, but there is sure to be some value for those interested in wagering on the fight. A lot of times in boxing, the Las Vegas bookmakers have terribly unbalanced moneylines — you only need to look as far as the current odds for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (-1800) to understand that.

With Golovkin’s unbelievable KO streak and amateur pedigree, he cannot be overlooked, and the power in the right hand of Chavez and his professional resume make it difficult to have him be an underdog. It is sure to be a close matchup in the the ring!
