Adonis Stevenson Is Ducking Fight With Sergey Kovalev
Once again, we as boxing fans must suffer because egos prevented a big time fight from happening. After Saturday night’s HBO boxing card where Sergey Kovalev dismantled over-matched Cedric Agnew, Kovalev stated his heartfelt feelings toward the light-heavyweight champion, Adonis Stevenson. “Adonis Stevenson is a piece of ****, sorry for my English.” Those were Kovalev’s words after his KO victory. As previously detailed, Stevenson suddenly left HBO for Showtime last week seemingly losing all hope of a light-heavyweight showdown between him and Kovalev. It is said that the contract was agreed to but not signed by Stevenson’s team.
The best part of all of this is following Kovalev’s comments, Stevenson took to the social networks and once again we go back to the same old adage “talk is cheap.” Stevenson preceded to light up twitter with messages like this “@kovalboxer you cant fight for ****! Tell mama Duva to call Al Haymon and Yvon Michel so I can have an Easy pay day” Mama Duva refers to Kathy Duva, Kovalev’s promoter and top business figure in boxing for the better part of the last 30 years. Stevenson has no intention of fighting Kovalev; if he wanted it, he would have made his team close the deal.
Regardless of who fouled up the situation, and frankly it looks to be a bit of everyone, there is one thing that is clear. If Stevenson sees Kovalev as easy work and an easy payday, then he is the one with the power to tell his team that is the fight he wants. No one else can voice that for him, and he hasn’t, until after the deal was thrown out of course.
