Top 5 Fights to Make in the Wake of UFC on FOX 11

Fabricio Werdum punched his ticket to a UFC heavyweight title clash against champion Cain Velasquez with a dominant effort at UFC on FOX 11 in Orlando. The Brazilian bloodied and battered Travis Browne over five lopsided rounds in the main event. The card featured some entertaining affairs and exciting individual performances. Here is in my opinion the top five fights to make after UFC on FOX 11.

5. Yoel Romero vs. Gegard Mousasi/Mark Munoz winner

Romero continued to impress by recording a dominant unanimous decision win over Brad Tavares. The powerful Cuban has a stellar Olympic wrestling background that’s complimented by his enormous power. With four-straight Octagon victories, he’s proven worthy of facing top-10 competition. The winner of the May 31 matchup between Mousasi and Munoz would seem a strong next step for the 36-year-old Romero.

4. Thiago Alves vs. Matt Brown/Erick Silva winner

The “Pitbull” made a triumphant return to the Octagon after a two-year absence due to injuries and surgeries by defeating Seth Baczynski in a bloody three-round battle. It produced the Fight of the Night. Alves is a former title challenger who obviously is looking to make up for lost time. A matchup against the winner of the May 10 clash between Brown and Silva would be an exciting and explosive opportunity.

3. Travis Browne vs. Junior dos Santos/Stipe Miocic Loser

Browne saw his stock take a hit with the rough outing against Werdum, but is still a dangerous threat in the division. The road back against the loser of the May 31 clash between the former champion dos Santos and Miocic would seem a good start. Both are ranked in the top 10 and Browne's power and toughness would be a test for either of those competitors.

2. Donald Cerrone vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov

Both Cerrone and “The Eagle” turned in solid efforts in Orlando. “Cowboy” is looking to make a title run and has produced three-consecutive finishes after his first-round stoppage of Edson Barboza. Nurmagomedov is a perfect 6-0 inside the Octagon after grinding down Rafael dos Anjos and has emerged as a serious title threat. This matchup would be a pivotal one for the 155-pound landscape.

Werdum earned his title shot against the dominant Velasquez by producing a stellar performance against the dangerous Browne. The improvements to his overall game make this an intriguing matchup. Werdum’s striking is now a solid complement to his superior submission skills. Velasquez, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, is hoping to be ready by November. Getting by Browne is one thing, dethroning Velasquez will be a much more formidable task.
