Luke Rockhold Starts Title Run With Win Over Tim Boetsch
Strikeforce never used to get the respect of the MMA world. Now that the organization’s roster has been folded into the UFC and their champions are finally getting some interesting fights, it is now time to see if they did deserve respect. As it turns out, they deserve a lot of respect. Last night, Luke Rockhold showed some of the slickest grappling the UFC has ever seen when he submitted Tim Boetsch. I believe that this victory has marked the beginning of his title run.
One of the things that impressed me the most was Rockhold’s intelligence in last night’s bout. A fighter can be tough, durable and in shape, but I think that intelligence is what separates the good from the great. The scramble that Rockhold was able to get in, and then the positions that he transitioned to showed me that he was extremely calm and knew where he was the entire time.
Rockhold had an opportunity and he took it with voracious intensity. After such an impressive victory, what is next for him?
He is pining for a rematch with Vitor Belfort and while that could be fun, I think that a match with Michael Bisping would be a lot more fun. It is pretty obvious that the UFC is ready to take Rockhold seriously, so I expect a fun fight for him next so he can gain more popularity in the process.
