Can you believe that Andrei Arlovski is set to fight at UFC 174? I mean, not only is this awesome, but I think old-school MMA fans everywhere are excited to see one of the old dogs get back into the Octagon. Arlovski is set to face off against Brendan Schaub this Saturday, which is a scary choice. Schaub is a really good wrestler with an improving ground game. This could spell disaster for Arlovski.
Arlovski’s bread and butter are in his hands. He is an extremely fast Heavyweight who likes to utilize standard boxing techniques to pick his opponent apart and then launch heavy attacks to try and knock them out. The style used to serve him well, as most of his fights were over pretty fast due to his amazing speed for such a big guy. Unfortunately, that was then, this is now. In the UFC right now, the Heavyweight division is stacked and has completely changed. We are now seeing Heavyweights who are not only extremely fast and extremely big but extremely strong. Long gone are the days of standing and throwing bombs until someone goes out, which again, spells trouble for Arlovski.
Every way I play this fight out in my head, I just don’t see this working out well for Arlovski. Yeah, he will always have a puncher’s chance and Schaub does have a pretty weak chin, so Arlovski could throw a bomb and get lucky — but that is about it. Schaub has really fallen in love with his ground game, and Arlovski is not a great wrestler, so I bet that Schaub gets a take down and ends up choking out Arlovski. The new dog will win this one and send Arlovski packing back to another fight league.
