With the news that Daniel Cormier is now fighting Jon Jones for the title, the mixed martial arts community lost their collective minds. Everyone thought that this would be the biggest fight in UFC history, and I agreed; that was until Anthony Johnson demolish Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Johnson has had a weird fight career. He used to cut massive amounts of weight and was actually released from the UFC because he missed the limit too many times. He then went into other organizations and started to compete at his natural weight of Light-Heavyweight. It turned out to be the right move because he started to demolish people. The UFC called him back, and here we are today, back and better than ever.
At UFC on FOX, Johnson put Nogueira to sleep in a little less than a minute. It was absolutely brutal. It sent a statement to the Light-Heavyweight division that Johnson has arrived and was ready to fight for the title. Do I think that he is ready? No, not yet at least. He needs at least one more win, and it needs to be a big win. There is still a guy named Alexander Gustafsson who was promised a rematch with Jones. In order to skip Gustafsson, Johnson needs to make another statement. It sounds hard, maybe even impossible, but to jump in front of someone for a title shot you need to prove beyond any doubt that you deserve it. Johnson started it off with this win, and he now needs to keep it going to have the right to challenge the winner of Jones and Cormier.
