Welterweight prospect Jordan Mein has been left without an opponent for UFC Fight Night 49 after a gruesome toe injury suffered by Brandon Thatch. Thatch posted pictures of the injury on social media after suffering a compound fracture during training. “Rukus” had been brought in as an injury replacement for veteran Thiago Alves to battle Mein at the Aug. 23 event in Tulsa, Okla.

It’s not known whether the promotion will have time to find a third opponent for the talented Canadian. Mein is fresh off a unanimous decision victory over Hernani Perpetuo at UFC on FOX 11. He’s gone 2-1 in his Octagon tenure with the lone loss coming in a spirited battle against welterweight contender Matt Brown. The 24-year-old has a wealth of experience at a young age having compiled a record of 28-9. He’s been up against some strong competition in the past, and is ready for a step-up at the UFC level.

Thatch has run into some unfortunate injury luck after showing his mean streak in his first two UFC appearances. He’s recorded impressive first-round finishes of Justin Edwards and Paulo Thiago. Thatch has produced a remarkable ten straight first-round stoppages. He’s been quick to establish himself as one of the more entertaining prospects in the 170-pound division, but his momentum has been stalled again by the injury bug. Thatch is a destructive closer who possesses a superior striking game.

While news of the scuttling of the Thatch-Mein matchup is disappointing, hopefully matchmakers will consider rebooking the fight at a later date. The aggressive styles of both competitors makes it a contest that is worth revisiting.
