Henry Cejudo Should Have Taken WWE's Offer Instead of UFC's

Henry Cejudo is used to making headlines. After winning a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Cejudo made a natural transition to MMA. After going unbeaten in his first six fights and getting a call from the UFC, it seemed to be a successful decision. Yet it looks as though Cejudo could have made the wrong career choice.

Just last week, Cejudo made headlines for a less than flattering reason, as he was scratched from his planned UFC debut against Scott Jorgensen. Cejudo became sick while attempting to cut to 125 pounds, and subsequently missed weight for his third consecutive bout. UFC President Dana White later said that Cejudo would have to fight at 135 pounds in the future, or not in the UFC at all.

That wasn’t the only buzz surrounding the former Olympic champion. Just weeks prior, it was revealed that the WWE had made Cejudo an offer to join the promotion as well. Typically, the WWE doesn’t show interest in competitors of Cejudo’s size, but he was an exception. Their plans were even more surprising, as the company hoped to push the diminutive Cejudo as their next major Hispanic star in the same light as legend Rey Mysterio Jr.

The move would have given Cejudo almost lifelong financial security if it had worked out, as pro wrestlers often perform into their 40s. Even after that, there’s a market for returns, merchandise, conventions and royalties –something the UFC can’t usually offer, especially later in life.

Sure, the travel is hectic, and there’s a lot of work to be done just to get to the WWE, but Cejudo would have likely been earning six figures in a short amount of time in the WWE. Since his fight was pulled last week, it’s unclear what he’s making in the UFC, but it probably doesn’t touch his WWE possibilities.

Cejudo will be a fantastic MMA fighter, especially if he becomes well rounded. But there’s still plenty of time for Cejudo to change his mind since he’s just 27. Maybe these three failed weight cuts will eventually change his mind.
