Demetrious Johnson Clears Out Division With One More Victory
Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson is one of the most dominant UFC champions of recent memory. Since becoming the UFC’s first ever flyweight champion, he has comfortably won every challenge thrown his direction. He has showcased his skill set widely, defending his title by knocking out opponents or submitting them.
‘Mighty Mouse’ is the quickest and most technically gifted athlete among all mixed martial artists today. He trains out of AMC Pankration with prestigious head coach Matt Hume, who goes by the nickname ‘The Wizard’ due to his outstanding game plans and tactics that he gives to his fighters. His team and head coach have helped Johnson drastically, and in every single fight he takes we see some form of progression in his martial arts.
Johnson is now on the verge of clearing out his respected division, successfully defeating four out of the top five ranked flyweights. Jussier Formiga remains the only fighter ranked in the top five who hasn’t had a shot at the champion. Johnson is currently riding an eight-fight unbeaten streak and holds an MMA record of 21 wins, two losses and one draw. He has four wins by knockout, eight by submissions and nine going to usually a lopsided decision. His draw against Ian McCall was soon put behind him when he confidently won a comfortable decision in their rematch. Johnson has notable victories over top contenders McCall, John Dodson, John Moraga, Ali Bagautinov, Chris Cariaso and Joseph Benavidez.
The UFC haven’t given Johnson a No. 1 contender since his recent submission win over Cariaso at UFC 178. Dodson seems to be the favorite to get the rematch he so desperately wants; however, Formiga, being the only opponent in the top five who hasn’t had the opportunity, could also be a slight favorite. Whoever the UFC goes with, one more victory and a sixth defense of his title and ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson will have successfully cleared out his division. Clearing out the division could then open up some potential super fights in the near future.
