Chico Camus Proves A Solid Addition To UFC Flyweight Ranks
A decision to drop down to the 125-pound ranks paid immediate dividends for Chico Camus at UFC Fight Night 57. The former bantamweight competitor made a successful flyweight debut in Austin, Texas against veteran Brad Pickett in earning a split-decision triumph. As a result of that win, Camus is now locking down the No. 15 spot in the latest UFC rankings.
Camus showcased some fancy footwork, accurate and diverse striking, and good defense in the win. It was the biggest victory of his Octagon career and added to Pickett’s recent woes. The English fighter, who was a former bantamweight contender, has now dropped three of his last four fights and is just 1-2 since making the move down to flyweight.
While a victory over the struggling Pickett doesn’t carry the weight that it used to, it was still a win over a proven name. With the thin division always in search of fresh talent, Camus should prove an exciting addition. “The King” definitely seems to have his game in peak form as he looks to make some noise in the flyweight landscape. The 29-year-old showed the type of speed and cardio that are keys to success.
By making a solid statement with the win over Pickett and improving his UFC record to 3-2 with one no-contest, Camus has some intriguing options for his next fight. I wouldn’t mind seeing Camus square off against Louis Smolka in his next appearance. Smolka is coming off a spectacular knockout win over Richie Vaculik at Fight Night 55 in Australia.
Another exciting possibility could be to match Camus up against the winner of the UFC 182 clash between Kyoji Horiguchi and Louis Gaudinot. Whatever the matchmakers decide upon, Camus will have some stiff challenges ahead that should produce more entertaining battles.
With his career as a bantamweight stalling after his UFC 173 loss to Chris Holdsworth, it looks like Camus has found a comfortable new home in the 125-pound landscape. He’s definitely off to a positive start and seems poised for bigger and better things ahead.
