With the news that serial batterer of women Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao met privately in Pacquiao’s Miami hotel suite on Tuesday, Jan. 27, hours after their very public meeting during halftime of a Miami Heat game, the boxing world might have good reason to believe that the long-awaited fight will one day take place after all.

Michael Koncz, Pacquiao’s advisor, was on hand to witness the meeting and told ESPN’s Dan Rafael that the conversation was “pleasant” and “very encouraging.” Koncz added that he and Pacquiao give credit to Mayweather for visiting them, and said that all parties involved will determine what will happen over the next couple of days.

It should be noted that no deal has actually been reached, but make no mistake about it: We are now in completely uncharted territory as far as the negotiations surrounding the fight are concerned, and that’s because Mayweather and Pacquiao have finally established a personal rapport.

Back in 2009, when both fighters were in their primes, negotiations fell apart due to Pacquiao’s unwillingness to submit to Olympic-style drug testing. For the next five years, other efforts made by both sides to re-negotiate boxing’s biggest showdown also fell apart.

To put it simply, both sides have been at fault. The difference now is that both fighters have personally communicated their concerns to one another, seem willing to make this fight a reality and should be able to let the world know whether the fight will actually happen by the end of this week.

If the fight is made official, it will undoubtedly shatter all pay-per-view records and become the richest event in the history of the sport. Both fighters would most likely earn in excess of $100 million, and viewers would likely be charged $100 just to watch it.

Keep in mind that the Super Bowl is just around the corner, so if the fight is as close to being made as Koncz says it is, don’t be surprised if it is made official Sunday, Feb. 1, at some point during halftime.
