Cons

Learning Rate: Robert Griffin will comprehend an NFL playbook over time.  He won’t grasp an NFL playbook right away like Andrew Luck or Matt Barkley.  Luck and Barkley have played in NFL west coast offenses for multiple years which is why I believe they have an edge over Robert Griffin III at this point.

Griffin may need a year or two to sit out learning an NFL playbook.  At the end of the day I get a very strong indication that Griffin will grasp the concepts of an NFL playbook over a 5 year timespan in the NFL despite facing potential scrutiny from NFL critics early in his career.  Robert Griffin III should master the concepts of an NFL playbook by his 3rd season in the NFL if the team that drafts him maximizes his ability.

A lot of people are getting the misconception that I’m trying to knock Griffin in the learning rate category.  That could not be further from the truth.  Griffin is a sharp football player.  I’m just slightly skeptical of how he adjusts from the college to the pro level because the speed of the game is completely different.

Holds Onto the Ball Too Long: Sometimes Robert Griffin III takes too long to hold onto the football.

Progressions: Robert Griffin III struggles to make progressions at times.

My thoughts on Robert Griffin III

I love Robert Griffin III as a quarterback prospect.  He displays adequate throwing power, pinpoint accuracy, and Michael Vick’s flashiness coming out of Virginia Tech.  Robert Griffin III has the GPA and the mental discipline to be a successful NFL quarterback.  I would have no problem if the Eagles took Robert Griffin III as a replacement to Vick if he fell to their pick.

Believe it or not I was the very first person on the Robert Griffin III bandwagon.  Want Proof click the following link below.  This mock draft was my very first 3 round mock draft I posted back on June, 3rd, 2011.

http://www.rantsports.com/mock-draft/2011/06/03/2012-nfl-mock-draft-3-rounds/

If you clicked the link I had Robert Griffin III going 8th to the Oakland Raiders before the 2011 NFL Supplemental Draft when the Raiders took Terrell Pryor.  Feel free to comment on which picks I was right or wrong about in that Mock Draft I made way back in June.  A lot has changed between now and June.  One thing that didn’t change is where I would rank Griffin.  In fact, you could make the case that I should rank him higher than 8th overall after Saturday’s signature win over Oklahoma.

I’ve been saying all summer about how Robert Griffin III is the most underrated quarterback in this draft and how Landry Jones is the most overrated quarterback in 2012.  I may be wrong once their careers unfold at the next level.  Right now I look like I am right about each quarterback based on the recent performances.

There are mixed reviews on Robert Griffin III.  The bandwagon for Robert Griffin III has grown pretty strong over the past four months.

Every year it seems  a quarterback comes out of nowhere in the eyes of the public only to propel up draft boards.  I’m not surprised that Griffin III has performed this well, but most people are shocked by Griffin III’s amazing 2011 campaign to a certain degree.

Besides myself, a number of NFL draft personalties who make NFL mock drafts have joined the Robert Griffin bandwagon after I did.  The people who seem to like Robert Griffin III are hardcore high profile draft experts or draft sites who know what their talking about.

The following High profile personalties began to show strong support for Robert Griffin III as a quarterback for the 2012 NFL Draft during the 2011 College Football Season

Matt Miller of Bleacher Report who has to be BR’s top NFL draft writer in my does an awesome job with his mock drafts.  NFL Mocks personalties like Jesse Bartolis and Sayre Bedinger have been working extremely hard with their 20 scouting reports that they post on Saturday’s for College Football.  NFL Mocks has been on the RGIII bandwagon since October.  The hard working AFC East beat writers for NE Patriots Draft and Buffalo Bills draft also like Robert Griffin III.  Both Walter Football draft writers Walter Cherepinsky and Charlie Campbell of Walter Football speak very highly of Robert Griffin III as well.

The writers and sites I mentioned above are some of the best in the NFL Draft business when it comes to posting quality content for their sites on the web.  If my word on Robert Griffin III isn’t good enough to convince you he’s legit maybe you should visit these different sites and hear these people chime their thoughts on the Baylor Bears signal caller.

This is a very outstanding resume of NFL draft sites who are in a consensus with myself on Griffin’s status.  Now we just need Adam Schefter to report Griffin’s status so everything checks out because lets face it Adam Schefter is to the NFL Draft what Chuck Norris is to Chuck Norris jokes.  Seriously though, Schefter is one of the best in the business.

While the Robert Griffin III bandwagon has grown significantly to the point where a good majority is on the bandwagon there still are some high profile draft viewers who believe Robert Griffin III is not worthy of being in the same discussion as Andrew Luck, Matt Barkley, and Landry Jones.

About a month ago I got a lot of negative feedback for saying Cam Newton would be a David Garrard quarterback at best.  I was beginning to think I rightfully deserved  negative feedback about Newton that I received heading into the Panthers bye week.  Once I begin to buy into Cam he reverts to the college quarterback that many NFL draft critics questioned.

I also said that Tim Tebow would have a better career than Newton.  At least 5 different people felt the urge to call me out nearly two months ago in the comments section.  My faith in Tebow is rewarding me as Denver is 6-1 in their last 7 games.  Where are all these Tebow haters who thought I was foolish for thinking Tebow could be better than Cam Newton?  You need to come back so I can tell you about how Tebow is 6-1 as a starter and how the Denver Broncos are in first place as of Week 13 of the 2011 NFL Season.

Were all entitled to our own opinions, but I want to know who is officially not on the Robert Griffin III bandwagon once and for all because Griffin downright outplayed Landry Jones Saturday night leading many draftniks to believe that maybe I have been 100% correct about Robert Griffin III this whole time dating back to my first 3 mock draft in June.

Griffin could end up pulling a Jake Locker if he returns to school with Tyler Bray and Arkansas’s Tyler Wilson both getting a chance to jump Robert Griffin III if Griffin opts to return.

I won’t comment on your opinion, but I want to see where people stand on Griffin now compared to the start of the year because a vast majority of people did not believe Griffin could become this good right off the back in 2011 dating back to June, July, or August.  People generated very positive impressions from watching Griffin play in September, October, and November.

I like Griffin III better than Landry Jones because I believe Griffin has the intangibles to become a pro bowler down the line.  Landry Jones has the gunslinger arm and the physical tools that scouts covet.  There are questions about the mental attributes   Jones has yet to show me in his 3 years as Oklahoma’s starter that he can improve his intangibles on a consistent basis.  Jones has thrown double digit interceptions in each year as a starter while operating in a shotgun spread offense.

I see potential to be a franchise quarterback with Luck, Barkley, and Griffin.  I don’t see it with Jones.  Only time will tell if Landry proves me wrong.

Jones displayed a tendency to chuck it deep on 5 step drops if you watch his 2010 tape.  Jones managed addressed this predictable element of his game by throwing more short and medium passes in 2011 which you have to applaud him for.

Now when you see Jones throw deep passes in 2011 the accuracy can be very inconsistent on some of Landry Jones medium and deep throws.

Robert Griffin III is a player who I think succeeds on Sunday’s.  While Griffin is generating a huge following he may become a polarizing prospect in the eyes of some doubters if he opts to declare for the 2012 NFL Draft

  1. hk says:

Cam Newton is crushing tebow in total qbr, you have no idea what metrics to use.

Newton will probably have 30+ tds and 5000+ yards this year. And he’s taller and more athletic than griffin iii who plays in the big 12 not SEC.

    • Chris Ransom says:

Ok hk. The Total Quarterback Rating is the all knowing answer for judging quarterbacks. Lets anoint Newton and ignore Tebow’s 6-1 record and 10 passing touchdowns and 1 interceptions. Newton only has 3,200 yards with 4 games left. Lets see Newton get to 4,000 passing yards in the next two games before speculating whether he reaches 5,000 passing yards. Newton could get 30 total touchdowns. He only has 13 passing touchdowns along with 14 picks which is what I’m looking at.
