Can You Blame The Buffalo Bills If They Reach For Stanford Tight End Coby Fleener With The Tenth Selection?
Douglas Jones-US PRESSWIRE

Heading into free agency the Buffalo Bills two biggest needs were finding 4-3 defensive ends and wide receivers to compliment Stevie Johnson.  The Buffalo Bills addressed both of those needs.

Buffalo addressed defensive end in free agency by obtaining Mario Williams and Mark Anderson as their pass rushers.

Buffalo has Stevie Johnson, David Nelson, and Lee Evans as their starting wide receivers for 2012.  Namaan Roosevelt, Derek Hagan, and Ruvell Martin will all have suitable depth roles in 2012.

Everyone assumes Buffalo is going left tackle at #10.  If Buffalo has faith in 2011 4th round pick Chris Hairston at left tackle and Erik Pears who started all 16 games at right tackle maybe the Bills will pass on the chance to obtain a blue chip left tackle with the 10th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.

As crazy as it sounds, I could see the Bills passing on a left tackle for a tight end like Stanford’s Coby Fleener.  This is one of the weakest tight end groups in years.  I got Coby Fleener graded out as a late first round talent with Clemson’s Dwayne Allen graded as my next best tight end as an early 3rd round talent.

The demand for obtaining a tight end has increased drastically thanks to the New England Patriots two tight end set featuring Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.  This is one of the weakest tight end draft classes in recent memory.  The demand for tight ends has increased thanks to New England’s success with their two tight end set.

Tight end is one of Buffalo’s biggest needs.  Coby Fleener is a huge upgrade over Scott Chandler at tight end.  The other thing you have to consider is that there is usually one or two major reaches in the top ten overall.  Buffalo rarely deals their draft picks by trading them.  The Bills taking Coby Fleener at #10 could be the pick if Buffalo really is desperate enough for a tight end.

Passing on a left tackle would really shake up the entire landscape of the 2012 NFL Draft because then the Arizona Cardinals would get their pick between Riley Reiff and Jonathan Martin at #13.  The Cardinals would take Reiff at 13 and that would likely cause Stanford left tackle Jonathan Martin to slip to the Chicago Bears at #19 overall.  Then Georgia offensive Cordy Glenn would slip to an AFC North team like the Cincinnati Bengals at 21, the Cleveland Browns at 22, or the Pittsburgh Steelers at 24.  Depending on where Glenn goes, Ohio State offensive tackle Mike Adams could fall to Cleveland at 22, Detroit at 23, Pittsburgh at 24, Denver at 25, Houston at 26, the New York Jets could trade back into round 1 with New England if they wanted Mike Adams as a right tackle, the New York Giants could take Mike Adams at 32nd overall.  The St. Louis Rams or Indianapolis Colts could also consider Adams if the Ohio State lineman slips to the top of the 2nd round.

Buffalo taking Coby Fleener as a tight end with the 10th pick would create a domino effect that causes left tackles to fall in the draft while messing up many peoples mock drafts.  Besides tight end, offensive tackle depth, a backup quarterback, a quarter cornerback, and linebacker depth the Bills have addressed their main team needs in free agency.

If the Bills are contempt with their current starters at offensive tackle then tight end may be the only route to go here by process of elimination if Buffalo wants to address a need.
