Preview of the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway
Kevin Liles-US PRESSWIRE

The third race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup is Sunday October 2nd at Dover International Speedway.  This track is a one mile oval similar to last week’s track except it is concrete and has much more banking.  It has 24 degrees of banking in the turns and 9 degrees on the straight a ways.

Although this track is similar to last week’s there will be some more passing.  There is also the possibility for major carnage when a driver spins, due to the self cleaning of the banking.  This tends to funnel a car back into traffic after hitting the wall and can create large pile ups.  Not that that is what we watch racing for.

This track is also a track that will punish you severely if you do not get your car set up correctly.  Typically, there will be less than 20 cars, or half the field on the lead lap at the finish.  The odds of this becoming a fuel mileage race are very slim but the way this season has gone who knows.

Matt Kenseth won the May race here from the 24th starting position.  This race is the one Jimmie Johnson needs to get back into the Chase.  He leads all drivers with 6 wins.  Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin are next with 4 wins but theirs came over six years ago. Greg Biffle, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, and Tony Stewart all have 2 wins at this track.

Jimmie Johnson has won 3 of the last 5 races here and I look for him to win again to prove all the doubters wrong.  I also expect the top ten to be dominated by Chase contenders yet again this week.

If you cannot get to the track, the race will be on ESPN at 2 PM ET.  Follow me on Twitter @brian_jr1 during the race.  Who do you think will win?  Please let me know by Ranting below:
