When Michael Waltrip Racing put together the program for the No. 55 Aaron’s Dream Machine which Mark Martin and Michael Waltrip would share driving duties. There were 8 Sprint Cup points’ races which would not be covered. From day one they indicated that if they got sponsorship and a driver the No. 55 car would be in those races. This would ensure that the No. 55 car would remain in the top 35. A week ago it looked like they were all set for 6 of those races with Elliott Sadler. Then extra thought was put into that effort with the realization that that would not be in the best interest of Elliott Sadler or his NASCAR Nationwide Series team.
Michael Waltrip racing was left to scramble and find a driver to replace Elliott. They found a driver in currently unemployed Brian Vickers. Brian Vickers will drive the car in both Bristol races, both New Hampshire races and both Martinsville races. Martinsville is the track where Brian took out Matt Kenseth and finished Matt’s chances for a championship last year.
This is a great opportunity for Brian Vickers to show his ability and possibly get a full time ride for next year. Brian Vickers said “I’m lucky to find a ride of this quality so early in the season. That Toyota won the pole last weekend in Phoenix and you saw it up front throughout the race. I know how good (crew chief) Rodney Childers and team are. I’ve known Rodney since I was eight years old. This car is tied for sixth in points right now. This is going to be fun. I appreciate the opportunity Michael and the entire MWR organization are giving me.”
