NASCAR Makes Changes To The All-Star Race

By Christy Valdez

One of NASCAR’s most famous races will no longer be the same. The 2012 edition of the All-Star race held in May will now be split into five segments.

Announced this week by NASCAR, the race will be split into five segments, with the first four containing 20 laps each. The final part of the race will be ten laps. Along with the changes to the race, the winners of the first four segments will get to head into pit road ahead of the rest of the competition before the final laps.

The final segment will be the dash for the cash, as drivers will go for the $1 million prize. At the moment about 19 drivers are eligible to race. Those drivers qualify by their wins from 2011 and from this season until May 12th, a week before the race.

The All-Star race will be held on May 19th, with two more drivers qualifying the day of the race in the Sprint Showdown. One more driver qualifies with the fan vote, with voting still open until the day of the race.
