Vickers will be replacing Mark Martin during the race weekend at Sonoma for the year’s first road course. This will be Vickers third race out of the eight scheduled with Michael Waltrip Racing for the 2012 season. Vickers’s last appearance in the cup series was back in Martinsville where he finished 18th.
Along with his return to the cup series, Vickers has a new sponsor on the 55 car for the weekend in RK Motors, a classic car dealership.
Vickers’s race weekend at Sonoma comes after competing last week in the 24 hours of Le Mans over seas. Vickers ran in the 24 hours of Le Mans for AF Waltrip Racing in the GTE-AM class. Along with Rob Kauffman and Rui Aguas, the team finished sixth within the GTE-AM class. The sixth place finish came after a transmission problem late in the race. The road course experience from the eight mile course from Le Mans will transfer over to Sonoma.
In the MWR race preview Vickers believes that his experience from last weekend can give him an advantage on returning to the cup series.
“The road racing laps and experience I have gained at Le Mans will hopefully help me in the Cup Series next week,” said Vickers. ”All of that with the fact that it is indeed Sonoma, a great place to relax after a long day at the track — and it hopefully will be a successful weekend.”
Vickers will also be competing in the second road course of the season, when the cup series goes to Watkins Glen.
