Daytona International Speedway Still Had A Big One Left In The Coke Zero 400

By Christy Valdez

Daytona International Speedway would not be considered Daytona unless it had it’s usual “big one”.

Despite a slow start to the evening, the race at Daytona International Speedway got crazy towards the finish. Most drivers were being cautious at the start of the race and hoping to keep most cars okay but by the end of the night most  of the field had wrecked.

The first caution of the night came on lap 90 when Kurt Busch decided to go three wide. In hopes of moving ahead a few spots Busch lost control and brought out the first caution of the night, collecting the 2011 Daytona 500 champion Trevor Bayne and a couple of more drivers. The cautions didn’t stop there and the big one was still to come.

Heading into the final ten laps of the night business began to pick up on the track. With nine laps to go, the big one occurred. About 14 cars were caught up in the crash that took out most of the lead lap cars and some of the front runners of the whole night. Among the drivers collected were Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, and Juan Pablo Montoya.

After NASCAR was done cleaning up the mess from the crash, with three laps to go the restart came and when the white flag came out so did another crash. Among the cars collected on the final lap crash were Greg Biffle, Dale Earhardt Jr, Kevin Harvick and a few others.

After starting from the back of the field Tony Stewart grabbed the checkered flag meanwhile the rest of the field was caught in the crash.
