NASCAR’s Sprint Cup regular season is almost over as the season rolls into the 26th race of the season, the last chance place to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup, at Richmond International Raceway Saturday night for the running of Federated Auto Parts 400.
Several top market drivers are at their last stop in a bid to make Chase for the Sprint Cup in the 2012 Sprint Cup Championship. Kasey Kane holds the top spot in the Wild card standings with his 2 wins and currently holds 11th place in the Sprint Cup standings. Other top drivers such as Jeff Gordon(13th in standings 8 points behind 12th) and Kyle Busch(12th in standings 5 points behind 11th) only have one win which means Ryan Newman, Marcos Ambrose and Joey Logano can leap frog over Kyle or Jeff if they make it to victory lane Saturday night.
Richmond has been known in the past to stir up a little madness and tempers may be quick to flare if a driver see’s his season and championship hopes come to a halt. Tony Stewart is 10th in points but also has 3 wins. He can rely on his wins and take a wild card spot, which could lead to an awesome battle between Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch. Jeff will be trying to back up a 2nd place finish he had at Atlanta but only has 2 wins in 39 starts in Richmond. On the other hand, Kyle Busch is no slouch at the short track in Richmond posting 4 wins in 15 starts and was the winner there in the spring.
So many different scenarios can play out Saturday night and it is exactly the excitement that NASCAR needs to showcase its format to the Chase. After an epic finish to the 2011 season, 2012 may be gearing up to be even better. “Who Knows What Will Happen 400” should be the name for this weekend’s show down as the table will be set for the 2012 Chase to the Sprint Cup Championship at the end of the race at Richmond International Raceway.
