Look Out Now Jimmie Johnson is at One of His Best Tracks

Andrew Weber- US Presswire

Last week NASCAR was at the one mile short track called New Hampshire Motor SpeedwayDenny Hamlin dominated the race and won.  This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is at another one mile speedway but this one is very different.  This week NASCAR is at Dover International Speedway for the AAA 400 and Jimmie Johnson can’t wait.

Dover International Speedway is a one mile true oval racetrack.  The track surface is concrete and there is 24 degrees of banking in the corners with 9 degrees on the front and backstretch.  The race is 400 miles or 400 laps.

Last week Denny Hamlin had the confidence and backed it up; Denny’s driver rating for that race was 101.4, great but not dominating.  His average finish of 8.5 was something to talk about.  If those numbers were dominating than the numbers Jimmie Johnson has for this week at Dover are incredible.

Jimmie Johnson leads all active drivers at Dover International Speedway in driver ratings with a commanding 120.6.  His next closest driver is Matt Kenseth with a 110.5 followed by Carl Edwards at 104.8, Greg Biffle 104.2 and Kyle Busch at 101.6.  The rest of the ratings are below.

When looking at average finishes at Dover, Jimmie Johnson has a dominating average finish of 8.9.  The next driver with a good average finish is Matt Kenseth with a finish of 11.8.

When Jimmie was asked about Dover this week he said, “Well, you’ve still got to go run the race and run well, and as much as I love that track, and I have a fast car, and this guy (Jeff Gordon) sitting to my right does, too”  Jimmie further added, “You know, when you get to the Chase, you need to execute on your great tracks and get the results you should there, and then on your tracks that aren’t your best, you still have to have good days.”

Jeff Gordon has four wins at Dover, none since 2001.  Jimmie Johnson leads all active drivers with seven wins including the race this past June.

The contenders in the Chase for the Sprint Cup need to be worried.  Jimmie Johnson already leads the standings by one point over Brad Keselowski and six points over Denny Hamlin.

If you can’t get to Dover for the race you can watch it on ESPN Sunday, September 30th at 1 PM ET.
