After signing onto a brand new team, Kurt Busch might get a head start with his new team prior to the 2013 NASCAR season.
It was announced by ESPN on Friday that Busch will drive the No.78 Furniture Row Racing car at Charlotte Motor Speedway on October 13. Busch will go behind the wheel of the No.78 replacing current driver Regan Smith for the final five races of the 2012 season.
Busch signed onto Furniture Row after the race weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It was also announced during the weekend at New Hampshire that driver Regan Smith would not return to the No.78 car.
Smith, who has been with Furniture Row since the 2009 season has placed 26th and 28th in the point standings in the 2010 and 2011 season. In 2011 Smith captured the win at the Southern 500 at Darlington Speedway. Smith currently sits 23rd in the Cup Series points.
Smith’s final appearance and race behind the wheel of the No.78 car will come at Talladega Super Speedway, the fourth race in the 2012 chase.
Earlier in the season Furniture Row had hoped to expand to two team in 2013, with the possibility of having Smith and Busch as teammates.
During the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, Busch has been racing with Phoenix Racing. The team has gone on to race with Busch unsponsored through out the season. Currently Busch sits 25th in the points standings. Busch also races part team with Kyle Busch Motorsports for the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
