Sharing a ride in 2012 went so well for the guys at Michael Waltrip Racing that for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season they will be doing it again
Michael Waltrip Racing made the announcement on Friday that the team plans to have Mark Martin and Brian Vickers share time in the No.55 car for 2013. Both drivers along with team owner Michael Waltrip have shared time behind the wheel of the car by splitting the schedule with races each driver will do.
In the statement released by MWR, Martin mentions that he is fine with the partnership continuing.
“I love my schedule and I love our lineup,” said Martin in the statement. “Brian has a tremendous amount of experience and talent for such a young driver and you saw at Talladega that Michael Waltrip is as good as anyone in a restrictor plate race.”
MWR plans on having Martin behind the wheel of the No.55 Toyota Camry for 24 races in 2013. Martin will also drive the car in the 2013 Daytona Shootout, the Daytona 500 and the All Star race in Charlotte. As the primary driver of the car, Martin will get to start and end the season in the car by racing at Daytona and Homestead-Miami.
Vickers will drive the No.55 car for nine races, including Bristol, Martinsville, New Hampshire and the road courses, the same tracks he raced in 2012. As the ninth and additional race for next season, it will feature Vickers racing at Kentucky Speedway.
For Vickers, he feels very fortunate to have another chance with MWR.
“I feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to come along this year and i took a chance by running part time with a great team as opposed to full time and maybe not running quite as well and i feel like it’s paid off,” said Vickers in a press conference announcing MWR’s 2013 plans. “I’d love to be in this situation I’m in now full time next year, but i’m also very thankful to be in it at all– to even have the opportunity at all and very thankful for those nine races.”
Team owner Michael Waltrip will hit the track in the plate races for 2013. He will be behind the wheel beginning at Talladega in May and race in both Talladega races and the July race at Daytona.
Currently the No.55 team sits 14th in Owners points with four races remaining in 2012.
The partnership between all three drivers has been a success. When Martin has been in the car he has posted four top-five and nine top-10 finishes in 21 races. Vickers in his last seven races has posted three top-five and four top-10’s. In his Talladega appearance in May, Waltrip captured a top-10 finish.
