A lot of buzz came out of Daytona when Danica Patrick became the first woman in NASCAR history to win a pole. Winning one for the most prestigious race in the sport is a good way to start. That being said, not many people are giving Patrick a shot to win the Daytona 500. That is the wrong approach and I will tell you why.
When you race at Daytona, anyone can pull out the victory. If you can keep your car clean until the last 20 laps, you have a great shot at coming home with the trophy. That is the beauty of restrictor-plate racing. It bunches the field together, and it makes for some exciting finishes.
If you don’t think a driver like her can win this race, look back to 2011. A guy by the name of Trevor Bayne stole the show and came home with the trophy. It did not matter that he was with a underfunded team, and that he was a 20-year old. He kept his car clean, and he gave himself a shot to win the race. There is no reason that Patrick can’t do the same.
It’s going to be an interesting race on Sunday. Patrick may not be one of the top favorites but she is certainly no slouch. If she stay out of trouble, I expect her to be in contention. If that is the case, don’t be shocked when she comes home with that big trophy.
