What are the Chances that NASCAR Will Have to End the Daytona 500 Early?

Rain, rain go away, come back another day. That’s probably what NASCAR officials are thinking at the moment. After the mess that occurred during the 2012 Daytona 500, NASCAR is hoping that scattered thunder showers will miss the Daytona International Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

The chances of rain continues to increase by the hour as NASCAR hopes to get the full distance in this afternoon. The last rain shortened Super Bowl of NASCAR was the 2009 Daytona 500 where Matt Kenseth passed Elliott Sadler with 20 seconds to spare to win the Great American Race. Rain ruined last year’s event as the race was held on a Monday evening for the first time in the race’s history.

Ratings were obviously effected by the move and it was also shown with the empty grandstands. There’s nothing NASCAR can do to stop the rain, but with the new innovation of the “Air-Titan” track dryer which should be more effective than the old jet dryer. By the way, it won’t be as loud and annoying as the jet dryers either.

Weather.com is reporting a 35 % chance of rain at 3 pm and after while the National Weather Service said the chances have increased from 40-50 % throughout the day. If the race is rained out, it would be a great disappointment for NASCAR fans that have spent the majority of the past two weeks down in Daytona in preparation to see the Daytona 500. There isn’t a single sporting event with as fierce competition as the Daytona 500. There’s a reason that it’s the Daytona 500 and not the Daytona 250 which could be the real race. As long as the drivers reach half way in the event, the race is official and if NASCAR has to, they will call the race. However, that’s the last thing that NASCAR wants to do. With that, we’ll just have to see how severe the weather will get. The green flag waves at 1: 49 pm race fans, stay tuned.
