With a little over two weeks left before the 2013 Formula 1 season kicks off in Melbourne, the field of drivers has been set. Joining the field of hungry drivers is Adrian Sutil whose road back to the Formula 1 starting grid has taken a tumultuous turn over the recent calendar year.
Remember, it was Sutil who was missing from the field last year after losing his seat to Nico Hulkenberg after a successful end of 2011. Although the team says that the off track nightclub incident that nearly landed Sutil in prison had no effect on the decision, that is simply something that is hard to believe.
It is because of that incident, where Lotus boss Eric Lux ended up being cut by a champagne glass, that Sutil separated ties with longtime friend and fellow driver Lewis Hamilton. It was Sutil who rivaled Hamilton in lower divisions, and whose recommendation initially landed Sutil his opportunity with Force India.
Sutil earned his spot because of that talent. During testing, Sutil earned his spot back beating out current Force India test driver Jules Bianchi. Force India has not commented on whether Bianchi will retain his position with the team or not.
Overall, this is the best decision for both sides, but it is up to Sutil to continue right where he left off with the team. Will Buxton went on Twitter to say Sutil is “hungry” and he has every reason to be. This is more than just an opportunity. This is a chance for redemption, and an opportunity for a driver seeking to not only clear his name through victory, but progress his continually growing career.
