The Weekend At Phoenix International Raceway Brings Back Memories
It’s week two of the 2013 NASCAR season and two of its series return to a track that featured drama during the last visit.
As the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series make their way to Phoenix International Raceway for the second race of the season, it also brings back memories of the second to last races of 2012. For some drivers it’s a chance at redemption for others it’s the return where teams went against each other.
Upon NASCAR’s return to Phoenix, for Cup Series drivers Clint Bowyer and Jeff Gordon, it’s a return to the place where their acquaintance and possible friendship came to an end. The last time both drivers and their teams were at Phoenix things escalated from a wreck on the track to both teams going at it behind the wall. Things between both drivers got a bit out of hand and since the last race at Phoenix
Meanwhile, for Elliott Sadler the return of the Nationwide Series to Phoenix is a chance at redemption. During the last race at the track in 2012 Sadler had an opportunity to make the championship race a much tighter one against Ricky Stenhouse Jr. but things did not work out in Sadler’s favor. A late race wreck cost him his chance at the title and made the gap between him and Stenhouse much bigger.
Heading into the race weekend at Phoenix, for Bowyer and Gordon it could be a chance to put the past behind and move forward as they have been doing. For Sadler its his chance to leave what happened in the second to last race of last season behind and use it as motivation to go for the win.
As the race weekend progresses its possible that all these drivers will be reminded about their last visit to the track. It’s a new season and its time for a new Phoenix memory to replace that last 2012 one.
