Five Stories to Watch Going into the NASCAR Auto Club 400

After an exciting week at the high-banked Thunder Valley that is Bristol Motor Speedway, NASCAR will head west to the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. At Thunder Valley, we saw a rookie battling a veteran for the checkered flag in the Nationwide race, the reigning champ taking the points lead the first time this season, the young hotshot of Hendrick Motorsports winning, Five Time actually having a rough day, and we had a serious feud break out between ex-teammates. Only time will tell if these storylines continue or not.

If anyone had any doubts about whether the new Generation 6 car could put on a show, they were dismissed at Bristol. Keeping that in mind whether Gen-6 cars can make the Auto Club 400 into a good show is still a large question hovering in the air. The Fontana racetrack has always been known for great speed muted by lackluster racing on the track. It is much harder to pass at the Auto Club Speedway than at a short track like Bristol, it is also less likely that there will be any aggressive encounters (as Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano might hope.)

If the Generation 6 car can bring a new spark to this track, it could be fantastic for the NASCAR scene on the West Coast. While hoping for a significant improvement in the racing, also watch these five stories heading into this weekend in Fontana, California.

This Joe Gibbs Driver has always finished well at Fontana — can he make it a win coming off his momentum from a second place finish at Bristol?

Can the points leader keep up his record of top-fives, even at a track he hasn't been particularly fantastic at, or will the lead be relinquished back to Jimmie Johnson?

Will this feud between ex-teammates explode on the track if Logano gets near the No. 11 of Denny Hamlin? Logano certainly seems to think it will based on his sentiments post race.
